Malacanang and Judiciary Victorious in UNTV Cup 2 Fourth Week Elims

03/11/2014

Pasig City – The Malacañang Patriots and Judiciary Magis scored close victories in UNTV Cup ’s double header last Sunday at the Meralco Gym in Pasig City.

The Malacañang Patriots relied on their defense and running game to clinch their first win of the tournament in the expense of the Senate Defenders, 81-75.

It was a tight game all throughout as the Senate relied on their height advantage to offset Malacañang’s running game. With Senate’s Zaldy Realubit controlling the paint and Kenneth Duremdes scoring at will, the Senate took a 1-point lead, 62-61, halfway through the fourth quarter.

It was from there that the Patriots turned to their superior backcourt play, forcing turnovers and converting on fast break opportunities on the other end. Solid quarterbacking from Marlon Berganio and Sec. Joel Villanueva, finishing with 6 assists apiece, steered the Patriots offensive attack effectively. A timely drop pass from a Villanueva drive converted to a Malapit short stab as time runs out sealed the victory for the Patriots.

Malacañang slotman Greg Malapit topscored for the Patriots with 17 points and 6 rebounds. Hall-of-famer Kenneth Duremdes led the Senate with 31 points and 10 rebounds.

Malacañang is now 1-1 in Group B with the win. The Senate, on the other hand, is with 1 win and two losses.

Meanwhile, the Judiciary Magis managed to escape a last-minute barrage by DOJ’s  Paul Reguerra to win the second game, 101-96.

The Avengers raced to an early 12-6 first quarter lead. However, the Magis relied on their  to dominate for most of the game, posting a 98-90 lead with just a minute remaining in the game.

With most of their main players fouled out early in the fourth, the Avengers relied on reinforcement Paul Reguerra to keep them within striking distance of the Magis. The Avengers forced the Magis into several turnovers down the stretch as Reguerra converted on the other end. However, it was too late for the Avengers as there was not enough time for them to mount a comeback.
