UNTVweb.com: PASAY CITY, Philippines — UNTV-BMPI Chairman and CEO Daniel Razon was conferred the degree Doctor of Humanities Honoris Causa by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) last May 6, citing the TV host’s outstanding contributions in the field of broadcast journalism and public service.

Razon, a broadcasting graduate from the Centro Escolar University, received the doctorate after being introduced by PUP president, Dr. Dante Guevarra during the university’s commencement exercises at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

“We selected Kuya Daniel as guest speaker and he was conferred the doctorate degree Honoris Causa Doctor of Humanities for his exemplary works not only in broadcast journalism but also for his public service works,” said Dr. Guevarra in the vernacular during an interview with reporters.

The PUP president said the university’s board considered Razon’s efforts through UNTV in helping the poor and victims of accidents. “He (Razon) helps provide people’s daily needs such as giving free commuter rides, free education, medical help, and giving out of medicines.”

Other factors that the board considered in selecting Kuya Daniel include his numerous blood donation drives and his expertise in numerous fields and disciplines. Because apart from his works in the media, Kuya Daniel is also a composer, photographer and film and television director. Kuya Daniel launched the news-and-rescue command center at UNTV early this year as a response to this brand of journalism called, Tulong Muna Bago Balita (Rescue First Before Reporting).

One of the board of regents member, Corazon Alma De Leon, cited Kuya Daniel’s TV program, Get it Straight, which she said sits well to the university’s advocacy to do good. Ms. Alma De Leon was former chair of the Civil Service Commission and former secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

In his speech delivered before some 6,000 graduates, Kuya Daniel advised the graduating students to learn to guard themselves from becoming too self-conceited which may lead to egotism, which is the practice of excessively talking and thinking about oneself.

This was the first honorary doctorate given to Kuya Daniel who is also popularly known as Mr. Public Service because of his key public charity projects at UNTV in partnership with the religious group more popularly known as the Ang Dating Daan group being presided to by Bro. Eli Soriano.

“To the youth who graduated, our hope is for them to be awakened by the good deeds that should be done and how to remain walking to the right path,” stressed Razon during an interview with reporters.

Kuya Daniel thanked the administration of the university headed by Dr. Guevarra and the members of the Board of Regents for the recognition. He further said that he is looking forward to continue the advocacy and the good deeds that were initiated being a small instrument in this endeavor. (Ryan Borja and Grace Casin, UNTV News)
